Practice Focus

Mr. Byer heads the firm wide appellate practice at Duane Morris LLP and is resident in both the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh offices. He is a former Pennsylvania appellate judge (Commonwealth Court) and a former judge of the Pennsylvania Court of Judicial Discipline. He has argued or briefed approximately 175 civil appeals in seven of the Federal Circuits and in the appellate courts of several states. His appellate experience covers a wide range of legal areas, including intellectual property (patent, trademark and copyright), antitrust, corporate governance, tax, contract, employment, toxic tort, Constitutional and administrative law cases. He has served on the Lawyers Advisory Committee of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. He currently is in his fourth term (not consecutive) as a member of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court's Appellate Court Procedural Rules Committee, and he chaired that Committee for five years.
